Description
Important collection of drawings and writing by Charles Randle of the Royal Navy, dated 1776 to 1830. (Follow this link to view a flipbook with photos of almost every page: https://publuu.com/flip-book/83345/821898 ). About 24 pages of hand-drawn and colored animals and plants, six coastline sketches, 16 detailed maps, and 11 pages of writings, including poems and devotionals. Randle (1755-1838) served aboard the HMS Majestic as fourth lieutenant. Commissioned in 1793, he served during the Battle of the Nile in 1798 (one of the pages in the volume is a poem and map he made about the battle). Later in his career, he was promoted to Captain. The earliest sketches in the book are coastlines in Canada, dated 1776. Around 1788, he began drawing animals and plants, as well as detailed maps. Most drawings are signed and dated. The book measures 14-1/2” x 10-1/2” and has been professionally rebound, with archival paper and corners for each page. PLEASE NOTE: This is one of several ship journals in today's sale, all from the same collection. See Lot 1 and lots 142-148. This item can be shipped in-house.
