Description
Lever action .30 cal Winchester Model 1895, serial number 20586. Manufactured in early part of 1899. Original owner was Pvt. O'Connor Lee Jones, who served on the crew of Gatling Gun No. 1 during the Battle of Santiago, positioned directly in front of the Rough Riders. (See https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/AD1120509.pdf, plate 139-40, and 167) Roosevelt famously presented a somewhat fancier Winchester 1895 (serial number 23576) to Gen. Leonard Wood in 1899. Provenance: According to family history, Theodore Roosevelt gifted each member of the gun crew with an 1895 Winchester soon after the Spanish American War. Pvt. Jones' daughter, Queenee, married Frank H. Mayfield, a prominent neurosurgeon. Rifle was passed thence by direct descent to consignor. Includes letter affirming authenticity from the great-grandson of O'Connor Jones. This item can be shipped in-house. Please check the shipping details in our terms and conditions for specifics on firearm shipping. Blackwell Auctions holds a Federal Firearms License (FFL). All firearms: pistol, revolver, shotgun & rifle transactions will be conducted in accordance with local, state and Federal laws, without exception.
Condition
Well cared-for, gorgeous rifle. Unrestored and all original, except for screw on left side of receiver where it was tapped for a peep sight. Very fine condition, with a couple of minor oxidation spots, no pitting. Very little wear. A couple of minimal touches to the stock. Excellent bore.
