Description
Ornately hand-decorated circa 1890s walrus ivory pipe, made by the Inupiat (aka Inupiaq, a sub-group of indigenous Alaskans). Measures about 18-1/4" long. Detailed depictions of hunters, whales, caribou, walruses, fish, men in boats, birds and many other images. A small hole in the bowl may indicate that this was used for opium, as opposed to tobacco. Pipe separates about 6-1/2" from mouthpiece to allow cleaning, secured by brass cylinder. PLEASE NOTE: The item can be shipped only where allowed by law. Prior to bidding, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with any local regulations that might affect their ability to receive this lot. This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
The bowl base has been chipped, as shown in images.
