Description
Document submitted to the Justices of Courts & Pleas, July 1840, in Duplin County, North Carolina. This " report of division of negroes" was part of the settlement of the estate of John Cranford, and it involved the appraisal, and (ironically) fair and equitable distribution of Cranford's 12 slaves to his heirs. Once each slave was given its appraisal value, the heirs drew lots, then choose their preferred slave. Witnessed by William Carr, James B. Monk and Samuel Houston. Document measures about 12-1/2" x 16-1/2" in 14-3/8" x 18-3/8" frame. This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
See images. Water staining along right corner, as shown in images. Very good condition for its age otherwise.
