Description
There doesn't seem to be consensus about how many of these were produced by Colt, as it was a special-order rifle. (Some sources suggest that it was primarily made by Colt's son for friends of his.) But all sources agree that there were between 35 and 40 of them produced between 1879 and 1885, and that the Double Rifle is among the rarest of all Colt firearms. Correct and all-original, this Double Rifle is Serial No. 3, matching on tang, barrels, frame and forearm. Steel butt plate. Correct early Lyman flip-up rear sight. Barrels 28" long. Caliber is .45-70. In June, Blackwell contacted Colt Archives about the possibility of obtaining a Colt letter, but the historian informed us that there are no extant records for the Double Rifle. As well, we posted a thread about the rifle on Colt Forum, where we were rigorously quizzed by experts and enthusiasts -- and one DR owner -- about this rifle. The thread is highly informative and detailed. Visit https://www.coltforum.com/posts/3656119 This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
Action very fine. Some frame finish wear, as shown in images. Barrels have correct brown finish with no dings or bulging, clean and bright bores. The only actual damage is an old reglue of a split along an inside edge of the forearm, not visible from the outside.
