Description
Dated April 8, 1814 with the name of Jacob Wendell on a silver plaque attached under the handle on the lid. Early American 19th century antique decorative leather and brass tack document box in the form of a miniature locking trunk. Leather covered wood with paper lining, dust edge around lid with scalloped design and remnants of the original pink or red pigment. Original drop handle centered on lid and locking mechanism with key. Jacob Wendell (1788 - 1865) was a Portsmouth, New Hampshire, merchant ship owner, importer, and insurance agent. Approx. 13"L x 8"W x 5-3/4"H. This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
Wear typical for age and 210 years of use including oxidation of metal parts and tarnish on plaque. Leather shows signs of wear and is dried out. Paper on interior partially intact. Lock and key are frozen. Some tacks missing. See images for more details on condition.
