Description
Happy New Year postcard handwritten by Babe Ruth to a close friend. Ruth has signed the pseudonym "Mock Duck," using the name of a notorious NY Chinatown gang boss. (Presumed to be an inside joke.) Many postcards from Ruth to Donohue have come to the market over the years, but this might well be one of the most interesting ones. Provenance: From the estate of Jimmy Donohue, owner of Donohue's Restaurant in Mountain View, N.J. Donohue became friends with Ruth in the 1920s and remained close with him until Ruth's death. Several items in today's sale came from this same estate. See lots 40 and 41 for baseballs signed by Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Jimmie Foxx, as well as Mel Ott. This item can be shipped in-house.
