Description
Business card with Babe Ruth's signature on verso. Accompanied by a letter from a father to his son, dated May 22, 1935 (envelope postmark matches). Letter reads, in part: "I though you might be interested to know that I saw Babe Ruth play yesterday. He performed wonderfully and did me the courtesy of knocking out a home run -- clear over the fence. The crowd surely stood up and cheered. He also was gracious enough to give me his autograph on the enclosed card. I thought you would like to get it as a souvenir ..." That game at Wrigley Field was the last one Ruth would ever play there, and the home run he hit on May 21 was among the last half-dozen of his career. He retired from baseball on June 2. The "R" in Ruth is overwritten (perfectly, presumably by Ruth himself), and the signature has the look of being signed while he was holding the card, but it's still a nice piece with excellent provenance. Letter, envelope and card have been in the family since 1935. Consigned by descendant of the writer and recipient. See lots 40 and 41 for baseballs signed by Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Jimmie Foxx, as well as Mel Ott. This item can be shipped in-house.
