Description
Cut signature of the 17th President of the United States. Johnson became President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His Reconstruction Plan required that States had to abolish slavery before being readmitted to the Union but offered no role for Blacks in the politics of the South. Feb 24, 1868 brought the first Impeachment of an American President, for "high crimes and misdemeanors" due to his violation of the Tenure of Office Act. Overall approx. 3-3/4" L x 3/4" H. One of several historic American paper items in today's auction. From a large and important collection of autographs and documents, many pieces of which will be offered in the March American Sale.
