Description
Cut signature of General Grenville Mellen Dodge. Union Army Officer Dodge served as Intelligence Chief for Ulysses S. Grant in the Western Theater. At the request of Abraham Lincoln he embarked on an1865 Campaign in the Laramie Mountains Black Hills Wyoming and found a pass that could be used by the Union Pacific Railroad. He became their Chief Engineer and helped develop the Transcontinental Railroad. Later in life he headed the Dodge Commission investigating the conduct of the Army during the Spanish-American War. Autograph reads Grenville M. Dodge Maj Gen U.S.R. Overall approx. 5-1/8" L x 3-1/8" H. One of several historic American paper items in today's auction.
