Description
Old Florida hand painted, red and off white with grey back, advertising sign for Gator Joe's incorporating a Coca Cola logo medallion button. Marked A-M 5-48 in lower right corner. Gator Joe's is found in Ocklawaha Ocala Florida and plays a major part in the local history. Established in 1926 the restaurant was named after an alligator living in Lake Weir. In 1934 the Ma Barker Gang was being actively hunted by the FBI, who intercepted a letter mentioning "Old Joe". This led them to a house on Lake Weir found 1/8th of a mile from Gator Joe's. 1935 brought a raid on the house and the death of Ma and one of her sons. Old Joe outlived Ma and her son, passing away in 1952 or 66, depending on the local story being spun. Holes on each corner and center top/bottom for hanging. Approx. 50-1/4" L x 16-1/8" H.
