Description
Oil on board painting of four people in a theater box by French artist Theophile Steinlen, presumed to have been made circa WWI, based on hair and clothing styles. Signed "Steinlen" lower right. The artist lived in Montmartre, where Moulin Rouge is located (he did produce a couple of portraits of Yvette Guilbert, who headlined there in the 1890s), as well as several other show venues. Whether or not the box in the painting is from a specific theater in Paris is unknown. Between Steinlen and his contemporaries -- most famously Toulouse-Lautrec -- the subject of people attending the theater was not uncommon. Painting measures about 19-5/8" x 24" in 26" x 30-1/4" wood frame. This item will need to be shipped by a packing company of your choice.
