One of a kind, unpublished Type I Kodachrome candid photo of Babe Ruth and his friend, James Donohue, dated on verso June 10, 1948. Ruth passed away a little over two months later. In this photo, taken outside Donohue's restaurant (the sign appears clearly in the background), a nattily dressed -- but clearly frail -- Ruth has to be supported by Donohue, who's supporting the baseball legend with both hands. A profoundly sad photo, despite the smiles on both friends' faces. Photo measures just over 2" x 3". Provenance: From the estate of Jimmy Donohue, owner of Donohue's Restaurant in Mountain View, N.J. Donohue became friends with Ruth in the 1920s and remained close with him until Ruth's death. Several items in today's sale came from this same estate. This item can be shipped in-house.
